I told my client to stop talking during her next interview

I told my client to stop talking during her next interview.

She looked at me like I was insane.

8 final rounds in 6 months.

0 offers.

Top MBA, 10 years of product leadership, solid references.

On paper, she was perfect.

In the room, she was drowning.

"Walk me through your last interview," I said.

"The VP asked why I wanted the role. I started strong. Then I saw the hiring manager's face shift...just a flicker."

"What did you do?"

"I explained my qualifications again. Added more context. I thought if I could just make them see..."

"Stop. Rewind to that flicker. What happened in your body?"

Silence.

Then: "Tight chest. Shallow breath."

There it was.

The moment she sensed doubt, she over-explained.

Justified.

Tried to win them back.

The more she talked, the less they trusted her.

She wasn't performing badly.

She was just PERFORMING confidence instead of HAVING it.

"What if you let the silence exist?" I said. "What if you didn't try to fix their doubt?"

2 weeks later, another interview.

My advice this time:

"When your chest tightens, slow down. Don't add more words. Trust the ones you already said."

The interview ran 15 minutes over.

THEY started sharing their challenges with her.

"It was as if I was interviewing them or I was coaching them."

Last week, she started her new job!!

All it took? A different presence.

She said it best: “I’ve been performing confidence instead of having it.”

When your body believes you, other people do too.
