$420k salary
$420k salary. Ivy MBA. Still interviewing for jobs she didn't want.
"Who are you trying to impress?" I asked.
"My dad."
She was 39.
Three months later, she had a new job:
4-day work week. First vacation in years.
Her dad's reaction?
"I'm proud of you, beta. It's about time you started living."
WHAT?!?! She was shocked!!
The limitations she thought he'd placed on her?
She'd placed on herself.
The approval she was chasing?
He'd been giving it all along.
Here's what I see with high achievers who feel trapped: We create the very prison we think we're escaping.
We internalize beliefs about what success "should" look like, then project those beliefs onto people who never asked us to prove anything.
Why? Because it's easier to blame external pressure than admit we don't know what we actually want.
The real question isn't "What will they think?"
It's "What do I think? And do I have the courage to find out?"
